How to Get Whatever Floats Your Goat Achievement in Minecraft

Minecraft players love collecting achievements. Some do it to brag to their online friends, others enjoy the extra challenge, and some are driven by an obsessive desire to complete every achievement in the game.

Whichever group you belong to, there is a good chance you’ve had trouble unlocking some of the more obscure achievements in the game. One such lesser-known achievement is “Whatever Floats Your Goat”.

If you need help unlocking this fun little achievement, check out our easy step-by-step guide.

What are the Requirements for Unlocking “Whatever Floats Your Goat”?

The “Whatever Floats Your Goat” achievement is unlocked by riding a boat with a goat on board. Pretty straightforward-sounding stuff.

The achievement is available in the Minecraft: Bedrock and Minecraft: Java versions of the game and requires that you are playing in Survival mode.

The only major difference between the versions is that completing the achievement in Minecraft: Bedrock grants 20 Gamescore points, colloquially known as mine coins. These coins can be used to purchase maps, skins, and other items on the Minecraft Marketplace. The achievement also grants the “Goat Floaties” outerwear clothing item as an extra reward.

How to Complete “Whatever Floats Your Goat”

Step 1: Get a Boat

There are two ways to get a boat in Minecraft. You can:

  • Craft a boat by combining 5 Planks (Java), or 5 Planks and a Wooden Shovel (Bedrock) at a crafting table.
  • Retrieve a boat from the Overworld by repeatedly punching one until it drops as an item.

Step 2: Get a Goat

Goats are a neutral mob found in mountainous biomes. They spawn in groups of 2-3 above opaque blocks on snowy slopes, jagged peaks, or frozen peaks.

There is a 5% chance that a goat will spawn as a baby. Baby goats can be identified by their smaller size and lack of horns. For this achievement, you can only use adult goats.

Step 3: Get the Goat on the Boat

There are two ways to get the goat in the boat.

  • Goats follow players who are holding Wheat within a 10-block radius. Enter the boat while holding grain, and the goat will follow.
  • Push the goat into the boat with your avatar. Do not punch the goat – this will make it hostile.

Step 4: Ride the Boat

Once the goat is in the boat, all you have to do is go for a ride. Enter the boat with the use key (right-click by default) and steer the boat using the forward, left, right, and backward keys.

Interestingly enough, you can use the boat on dry land. The movement rate is extremely slow, but it still counts for the purpose of this achievement.

If you’ve completed the previous steps, the game will notify you that you’ve successfully completed the achievement.
