Minecraft Midnight Mod Overview

Minecraft Midnight Mod Overview

Midnight is a Minecraft mod by Cryptic Mushroom which adds an entirely new dimension to the game for you to explore. The mod includes new blocks, items, mobs, biomes, and structures, all with a distinctly nocturnal theme.

The Midnight dimension is a dark and mysterious place, with danger lurking behind every corner. Your only source of light is a crystal scattered throughout the land and bioluminescent monstrosities stalking from the dark.

To explore and conquer these night-bound lands, you have to navigate dead forests and fungus-infested landscapes, craft weapons and armor from Nightstone and Rockshroom and fight Rifters and other dimensional horrors.

Here are all the things you’ll encounter once you step through the Midnight rift.

Mod Overview

To enter the Midnight, you must first find a Midnight rift in the Overworld. The rift is a structure that looks like a pulsating mass of red flesh. During the day, the rift is inactive. During the night the rift activates, allowing passage to the Midnight. Before you step in, make sure you’re prepared – this is not a place for newcomers.

Items

The Midnight mod also introduces a host of new items to the game. You can craft some using the new resources added by the mod, and loot others from enemies and the environment.

The most important new item added to the game is the dark pearl. Their primary role is to create rifts for traveling back and forth between the Midnight and the regular world. You can acquire dark pearls by throwing a geode item into a hard surface so it breaks.

Dark pearls are used as fuel in nightstone crafting furnaces, making them an essential component of Midnight’s resource economy. You can also combine dark pearls with powder from a mushroom (nightshroom, viridshroom, dewshroom, or bogshroom) to create spore bombs, a potent throwing weapon.

There are five new weapon and tool tiers, each corresponding to a new ore added by the mod. These include shadowroot, nightstone, ebonite, nagrilite, and tenebrum. There are also two new armor tiers, rockshroom and tenebrum.

Here is the full list of new items:

Mobs

The Midnight is a hostile environment with its own share of creatures and mobs. They can be passive, neutral, or hostile, same as in the base version of Minecraft.

The Midnight mod adds the following mobs to the game:

Passive Mobs

  • Chrystal lotus are small glowing bugs found in the crystal spires. They are very hard to hit because of their small hitbox.

Neutral Mobs

Nightstag is a neutral mob in the Midnight mod.
  • Nightstags are elk-like animals found in many places across the Midnight. They spawn in groups of two or three, and won’t attack unless provoked. Nightstags will follow players carrying unstable fruit, which they require in order to breed.
  • Skulks spawn in vigilant forests, fungi forests, and runebrush groves. Tamed skulks at full health can be bred using any kind of fungi.

Hostile Mobs

Midnight mod mobs - rifter
  • Rifters are tall decaying plant monsters found everywhere across the Midnight. They are the only mob in the Midnight that use rifts for travel. Sometimes they capture other animals to take them into rifts.
  • Hunters are flying mobs that spawn at high altitudes. When they spot a player or other creatures, they use a dive attack to strike their prey with their poisonous stinger.
  • Stingers are a black or green scorpion mob that spawns in underground caverns. They make loud hissing noises, which makes them easy to locate in the environment. Stingers drop eggs when killed, which you can either cook or place down to hatch more stingers.
  • Deceitful snappers are a lilac-colored fish mob that spawns in the shallow waters of the deceitful bog. They jump out of water and bite players with leech-like teeth when provoked.

Biomes

Midnight world in Minecraft.

The Midnight landscape contains several different biomes. Some are nocturnal versions of the biomes you find in regular Minecraft such as mountains, hills, and plains. Others like fungal forests and crystal spires are unique to the mod. Some biomes spawn as sub-types, adding even more variety.

The Midnight mod adds the following biomes to the game:

Surface Biomes

  • Night plains is a desolate biome covered with ghostly grass and dead trees.
    • Subtype: Spiked night plains
  • Vigilant forest is a dark, misty biome covered with trees like shadowroot and dark willow.
    • Subtype: Hilly vigilant forest
    • Subtype: Runebrush grove
  • Fungi forest is a biome rife with glowing mushrooms of all sizes, including nightshrooms, viridshrooms, and dewshrooms.
    • Subtype: Hilly Fungi Forest
  • Deceitful bog is a swampy biome with unique flora and fauna, including bogweed, bogshroom, and glowing orange fungus.
  • Warped fields is biome featuring mountainous terrain, rock formations, and water pools.
  • Obscured peaks is another mountainous biome composed mostly out of nightstone and trenchstone.
    • Subtype: Obscured Plateau
  • Crystal spires is a biome whose defining feature is a pink-colored sky and glowing bloomcrystal formations.
  • Black ridge is a biome defined by isolated hill-like ridges made of nightstone. No grass or trees grow here, but you can find mushrooms and other plants.
  • Phantasmal valley is a lowland biome that contains river-like pools of water. It is often found between other biomes.

Underground Biomes

  • Grand cavern is an underground biome with large nightstone stalagmites and stalactites. Instead of lava it contains miasma pools.
    • Subtype: Rouxe Cavern
  • Fungal cavern is an underground biome defined by narrow ravines, glowing mushroom globs.

Structures

The Midnight mod adds a couple of new structures to the game. They make it easier for players to orient themselves while exploring the Midnight.

The Midnight mod adds the following structures to the game:

  • Wells are a structure that are made out of shadowroot wood. They can spawn in every Midnight biome.
  • Shadowroot guard towers typically spawn in vigilant forests and are made out of shadowroot planks.
  • Molten craters are large surface holes filled with miasma.
  • Rifts are structures in the Overworld used for entering the Midnight dimension.

Conclusion

The Midnight mod feels less like a fan-made addition to the game, and more like an official expansion pack. It’s amazing what the folks at Cryptic Mushroom have managed to create (and release to the public for free) in their spare time.

Definitely check out the Midnight mod, especially if you’re into dungeon crawling. And if you are interested in hosting your own modded server, check out our guide How to Make a Modded Minecraft Server.
