How to Get Totem of Undying in Minecraft
The Totem of Undying is a rare item that can save a player from untimely death in Minecraft. It is the only item in the game with such power, making it one of the most sought-after treasures in the game.
The Totem of Undying is tricky, but not impossible, to find. Here is a quick guide on how to find it and cheat death!
What Does a Totem of Undying Do?
When the player drops to 0 health, the Totem of Undying activates and applies the following effects:
- Restores HP to 1.
- Removes all status effects.
- Grants Regeneration 2 for 45 seconds
- Grants Fire Resistance 1 for 40 seconds.
- Grants Absorption 2 for 5 seconds.
The Totem Undying is only good for one use, after which it disappears from the player’s inventory. The item works in Hardcore mode, both single-player and multi-player.
How To Get Totem of Undying?
A Totem of Undying can’t be crafted. The only way to obtain it is from monster loot drops, and the only monster that drops them is the Evoker. The Evoker is a spell-casting creature that spawns in Woodland Mansions and during Raid events.
Upon death, Evokers always drop a single Totem of Undying. The drop rate is not affected by Looting and other effects that change item drop rates.

What is a Woodland Mansion?
A Woodland Mansion is a structure only found in Dark Forest biomes and their hill variants. It is inhabited by two mobs, Vindicators and Evokers. Woodland Mansions typically generate far away from the player’s initial spawn point.
The easiest way to find a Woodland Mansion is to buy a Woodland Explorer Map, which can be purchased from cartographer villagers.
What are Raids?
A Raid is an in-game event during which waves of mobs spawn and attack a village. A Raid is triggered when a player with a Bad Omen status effect enters a village.
To obtain the Bad Omen status effect, a player has to kill an Illager Captain. These evil villagers are usually found at Pillager Outposts, Woodland Mansions, and in Raids. For each Illager Captain the player kills, Bad Omen upgrades, from Bad Omen 1 to Bad Omen 5. Each level of Bad Omen increases the chance of raiders spawning with enchanted equipment, making them more tough and deadly.
A Raid spawns several waves of mobs. The number of waves depends on the difficulty level you’re playing:
- 3 mob waves on Easy.
- 5 mob waves on Normal.
- 7 mob waves on Hard.
Evokers spawn during the 5th wave, which means you can only obtain Totems of Undying during Raids on normal or hard difficulty.
How To Use the Totem of Undying?
The Totem of Undying must be in the player’s hand (either main or offhand) to work. It will NOT work from the inventory, and it will only work from the hotbar if selected.
The Totem of Undying is a difficult-to-find, one-time-use item. This means you should carefully consider when to have it equipped. The penalty for dying in Minecraft largely depends on context. If you accidentally die near a respawn point, the instant resurrection advantage the Totem of Undying grants is wasted. However, if you die fighting the Ender Dragon on Hardcore mode, the Totem is quite literally your lifeline.
The one thing limiting the Totem’s usefulness is the fact that it occupies your main or offhand item slot. This means you have to forgo using either a shield or a weapon. This drastically reduces your combat effectiveness, making it more likely you’ll die. So, it’s a trade-off, you either go all-in with full combat equipment, or you sacrifice some of your combat potential for an extra life.

Conclusion
Death can be punishing in Minecraft, especially if you regularly play Hardcore mode. Luckily, the Totem of Undying allows you to cheat death once and continue your adventure as if nothing happened. With that being said, the thing that killed you in the first place will still probably be around after you respawn, so be prepared to fight again, or start running for your life!
